Which political party will hold the majority in the State House of Representatives will come down to one race.
As expected, the 172nd district race which represents Montgomery and Philadelphia Counties, remained a Democrat district as Sean Dougherty was declared the winner over Republican Aizaz Gill. Dougherty had 49.9% of the vote, and Gill had 48.1% with close to 98% of votes in the district counted. That gives each side 101 seats in the 203-seat house.
The final race that will decide it is the 72nd District race, which is in Cambria County. That race is between Incumbent Democrat Frank Burns and Republican Amy Bradley. Only 61% of the votes have been tabulated, and Burns has 14,502 votes compared to Bradley’s 13,404 votes. The vote is taking a while to tabulate as the county had problems with its voting machines and had to switch to paper ballots. At the time, a judge allowed the polls in Cambria County to remain open until 10 PM. Reports say that poll workers have been working night and day to count the ballots in the county.
