Cyber scam artists are busy this time of year all over the country. Crime experts say the holidays are a prime time for everything from fake tech support calls to phishing to cyber threats.
They say to think before you click suspicious links or emails. If you don’t know the sender of an email, don’t open it. And, of course, you already know the adage “if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.”
Officials from the Indiana County Sheriff’s Office echoed these warnings in a Facebook post on Tuesday, saying they will never send you a text message or phone call to inform you of a large payment due to missing jury duty. They add they will never request you to use a mobile app to pay fines and that they will never leave voicemails urging you to contact any number besides the main office line 724-357-3930.
Please call the sheriff’s office or your local law enforcement agency if you fall victim to any type of scam this holiday season.
