As another blast of winter weather is about to hit our area, PennDOT is reminding people to be careful when snow starts to fly.
PennDOT District 10, which covers Indiana, Armstrong and three other counties, will actively monitor winter precipitation over the weekend and will determine the best course of action to treat roadways to make sure they are clear and safe. Crews may be out pre-treating roads with a salt brine to give them a jump start on the road clearing efforts, but they will not if the storm that comes through is starting as rain, as it will wash away the brine.
Officials also stress that plows and other PennDOT trucks need room to work, so be sure to give them plenty of space on the roads. And for everyone’s safety, drivers should not try to pass a plow truck when it is plowing snow or laying down materials.
If a storm rolls through, the best thing to do is stay off the road until it passes. If you have to go out, make sure the car is clear of all snow and ice before you go. PennDOT also advises people to turn on their headlights in a storm, drive at speeds that suit the weather and road conditions, do not drive distracted and always buckle up.
