Hunters are gearing up for the start of rifle deer season on Saturday.
The season starts at sun-up tomorrow, and will continue from December 1st through the 14th, with the exception of Sunday, December 8th. This Sunday will be the final Sunday of the year where hunting is permitted by State law. Game Commission officials have said that they hope the expansion of Sunday hunting will be temporary as they want state lawmakers to remove the Sunday hunting restrictions. The bill to do so passed the state house earlier this year, but did not come up for discussion in the Senate and the bill will have to be reintroduced at the next legislative session.
Hunters are reminded that they must wear at least 250 square inches of fluorescent orange that’s visible from 360 degrees on the head, chest, and back at all times when out hunting. A hat and a vest will satisfy the requirement. The game commission also recommends that hunters should stay 25 to 40 yards apart, and always in sight of one another. They also say make sure that you can positively identify your target before making your shot. Never shoot at the sound of movement and always make sure you are aiming at legal game.
