Eight fire companies battled a barn fire at a farm along Wilgus Road in Montgomery Township yesterday. The alarm for the working fire was sounded shortly after 3 PM for the Commodore, Glen Campbell, and Marion Center fire companies, and for the Hope and Hastings fire companies out of Cambria County. Creekside, and Dayton responded with tanker assist and the Plumville, Hastings, Community, Rossiter, and Cherryhill Township fire departments served standby duty for the responding companies.
Firefighters were able to get the blaze under control within the hour, thanks to Clymer firefighters chopping through the ice of a frozen pond to provide a source for water. The steel roof on the building collapsed but no one was hurt. Firefighters remained on the scene for about three hours more.
Indiana County firefighters also responded Saturday to two accidents, one on Route 22 in Burrell Township, with Blacklick and Blairsville sent to the scene. And Pine Township and Nicktown were dispatched to a crash on Route 553 in Pine Township.
