Pennsylvania might have its first Republican challenger to incumbent Democratic Governor Josh Shapiro. Congressman Dan Meuser has told Philadelphia’s WABC-TV that he is seriously considering running next year.
The 60-year-old Meusser’s 9th Congressional District covers 12 counties in central Pennsylvania. He’s a former healthcare products businessman who served as the state’s Secretary of Revenue under Governor Tom Corbett and was first elected to Congress in 2018. He won re-election in November with more than 70 percent of the vote.
Shapiro would be a formidable opponent. He collected more votes than any candidate in Pennsylvania history in 2022, beating State Senator Doug Mastriano with 56.5 percent of the vote to Mastriano’s 41.7 percent.
Shapiro crafted his win by capturing the most populous areas of the state. He won only fifteen of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties in 2022 with Mastriano winning the other 52.
