The Pirates swung a trade with the Boston Red Sox on Friday, acquiring RHP Chase Shugart for RHP Matt McShane.
Shugart was designated for assignment by Boston on Wednesday to make room for former Pirates farmhand Blake Sabol, whom they claimed off waivers from San Francisco.
His “sweeper” pitch collected a 40 percent whiff rate last season between the minors and majors, and his fastball topped out at 98 miles per hour. Shugart made only six appearances with the Red Sox last season and posted a 4.15 ERA.
McShane was the Pirates’ seventh-round choice in 2024 and had a 3.95 ERA in 43-and-one-thirds innings.
