Last night’s League of Women Voters discussion focused on funding schools in rural areas, and one plan that has popped up is the elimination of the school property tax. One educator says that may not be the best plan.
Homer-Center Superintendent Dr. Charles Koren joined Superintendents from other districts and intermediate units for a media conference last week in Homestead. Dr. Koren said that while Homer-Center has been able to bring quality education to its student body, they would like to place an importance on funding for students. Koren said that one of the ideas for future school funding is to eliminate the school property tax and raise other taxes, but he said that for the taxpayers, that may not be a good idea. He believes that if the property tax were removed and other tax increases put in place, citizens may pay more in taxes than they currently do.
Koren was joined by intermediate units from Pittsburgh and Westmoreland County in getting their message out to the public before Governor Tom Wolf’s Budget Address which will be made on February 7th.
