Indiana-based Penn Mechanical Group joined Governor Josh Shapiro and officials from the Department of Environmental Protection in North Franklin Township, Washington County, yesterday to plug the 300th orphaned or abandoned gas well in the state.
The well sits between two reservoirs on the site of the future Waterslide Park, an 89-acre community hub, but it needed plugging after methane was reportedly leaking from it. Shapiro has made plugging abandoned gas wells a priority in his two years as Governor, even securing an additional $11 million in state funding to support the DEP’s plugging efforts.
Joining Shapiro at the well was PMG Operations Manager Bryan Treese. He said the task of plugging all these wells seems daunting at first, but they take it “one well at a time.”
Treese also commended the working relationship with Penn Mechanical Group and the Shapiro Administration for the quick work in plugging abandoned wells.
