A brush fire in Conemaugh Township Thursday afternoon left two-and-a-half acres of land burned up and one firefighter injured.
Tunnelton, Saltsburg, Iselin, Coal Run, Blairsville, Blacklick, Bell Township, New Alexandria, Homer City, and Slickville firefighters; Murrysville and Citizens’ Ambulance; and Team 900 were dispatched to Route 286 West shortly after 3 p.m. after a homeowner was burning garbage in the area, and it caught onto some nearby brush. Elderton, Bell Township, Creekside, New Alexandria, and Brush Valley Fire Departments were called for standby detail shortly after.
Dave Bruzda with the Tunnelton Fire Department said additional manpower was needed due to the fire heading uphill.
One firefighter suffered a minor ankle injury. Bruzda said they were evaluated on-scene and picked up by a family member.
In addition to the acreage, two sheds were lost in the fire, one metal and the other a wood shed. Crews were at the scene for a little more than three hours.
Seven other brush fires were reported on Thursday. Two were reported shortly after 11:30 a.m. in South Mahoning Township, and the remaining five happened between 1 and 5 o’clock. Details on those fires are not available.
