While today is known for innocent tricks and jokes, the Indiana County District Attorney and the Turnpike Commission is warning people not to be fooled when it comes to a scam concerning the PA Turnpike that could result in the loss of money.
The Turnpike Commission is warning people about the “smishing” scam that is once again popping up. The scammers will send text messages to victims claiming to be with the commission wanting to settle outstanding toll amounts in an effort to get personal banking information, and a link is usually included in the text. Officials say you should not click on the link. E-Z Pass customers and those using the toll-by-plate option can use the PA Turnpike’s website to check to see if there is a toll that is due, or use the PA Toll Pay app on their smartphone.
Those who receive a fraudulent text can report it to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.ic3.gov.
