Several people attending last night’s Indiana Borough Council Meeting said they wanted the borough to publicly state that they are friendly towards immigrants.
During the public comment section of Tuesday night’s meeting, seven people spoke up asking Indiana Borough to declare, in some form, that they would be friendly towards immigrants in light of the recent travel ban put in place by President Donald Trump. Alexandra Kaniasty, who is an immigrant herself, said that the recent federal actions has many immigrants scared.
Clara Roberts stated she was in agreement, but she said that if Indiana Borough Police were ordered to start arresting “people who are undocumented,” as proposed by federal and state legislation, it would take away from their actual police duties.
During the new business portion of the meeting, Council Member Gerald Smith asked the council to refer the matter to the Public Safety committee for further discussion. The focus of that discussion will be to review current police department practices and looking to protect the department’s role as servants and protectors of the community, not agents with Immigration Control Enforcement.
