Indiana Borough announced that legislation implementing a Local Economic Revitalization Tax Assistance (LERTA) program for property owners across the borough was recently passed.
The Borough, in partnership with Indiana County and the Indiana Area School District, said that the program will freeze local taxes on new construction or improvements – mainly repair, construction or reconstruction — over $20,000 for seven years, and property owners will continue to pay the pre-improvement taxes on the property for seven years before paying the improved tax rate. Borough members also specify that ordinary maintenance and upkeep are not considered improvements.
The goals of this LERTA program are as follows:
- To encourage economic redevelopment and long-term investments
- To encourage housing improvements
- To foster a general sense of well-being and prosperity throughout the community
- To improve the sustainability of tax revenue in coming decades
- To revitalize neighborhoods and support family housing
Borough Chair for the Community Development Committee Ben Ford said in a news release “partnerships like this will continue to grow Indiana into the future,” and residents looking to learn more about this program, or to obtain an application, should call the Indiana Borough Code Department.
