Members of the Indiana Borough Council gave an update on a tax credit program Tuesday morning.
Borough Manager Nicole Sipos and council member Ben Ford appeared on Indiana in the Morning yesterday to give updates on the Local Economic Rehabilitation Tax Assessment, or LERTA, program. Council passed this program in April 2022 and it is meant to help freeze taxes on substantial improvements made on one’s home or business.
One example this program will be used is if someone purchases a lot and builds on it, the project will not be taxed until the full project is complete.
Ford said that this program will help those interested in building within the borough to budget their project spending.
Ford adds that one of the requirements for this project is that it has to be a substantial project, not just one that entails new paint or the replacing of a door.
Sipos said the reason for the borough getting involved with LERTA was that six applicants who applied for building permits were eligible for the program, but had no idea it was possible. She adds that those interested can check a box when applying for a building permit to show their interest in being a part of LERTA.
Among other items discussed were upcoming paving projects in the borough. Sipos said that paving will get underway along the areas of Oak St. from 1st to 6th, Chestnut St. from 2nd to 6th, and Shyrock Ave. from 4th to 6th. It will take two weeks and it starts next Tuesday and Wednesday.
