
The IUP women’s basketball team defeated California, 68-60, Monday night to win the NCAA Atlantic Regional championship and punch its ticket to the Elite Eight for a second straight year.
Carolyn Appleby scored 24 points to lead the Crimson Hawks, including 20 in the second half. Brittany Robinson added 16 points and added a team-high nine rebounds. She was recognized as tournament MVP. Lexi Griggs scored 11 points.
IUP shot 49.1 percent from the floor.
Abbey Sporio and Seairra Barrett each scored 19 points for the Vulcans.
The Crimson Hawks are the only team returning to the Elite Eight from last year’s tournament. The Elite Eight starts next Tuesday in Columbus, Ohio.
