At Tuesday’s briefing with State Health Secretary Rachel Levine, a reporter from the Altoona Mirror said he’d been told that the nearest coronavirus testing opportunity for the public was at two drug store chains in Indiana, nearly sixty miles away from Altoona, and asked the secretary if the state has any plans to expand testing.
Levine replied that expanded testing is indeed a priority, especially in rural areas.
Levine also answered Mark Bertig’s question about antibody testing, which can be used to determine if someone has had the virus. Antibodies from people who have had and gotten over coronavirus might be effective in developing immunity to Covid-19. Levine said that there is hope that antibodies might be helpful but they are still not sure.
Levine said that the hoped-for method of antibody testing is that it would be done in a doctor’s office with a finger prick rather than by puncturing a vein, and that it could be widely available.
