The state-imposed limitations on businesses and activities during the pandemic have led to a big jump in visits to state parks, including Yellow Creek State Park in Indiana County.
The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources says the number of people visiting state parks and forests was 36 percent higher this May than last May. While it initially caused a lot of littering problems, the parks have a better handle on that now.
Yellow Creek State Park was up about 54 percent over last May, with 20,534 visitors. That’s more than 7,000 more people than in 2019, and it’s a good bet the June numbers will be even higher.
The 2,981-acre park opened its beach area for swimming last Friday at 75 percent of capacity. Reservable boating facilities, restroom facilities in day use areas, family campsites, park offices, cabins, unique houses, lodges, cottages, and yurts are also open, but group cabin camps will remain closed for the rest of 2020. Masks are required to be worn in park offices and any other indoor public space.
Events of 25 or more people and public educational programs resumed at state parks on Monday. On Saturday morning, Yellow Creek park manager Jim Tweardy will conduct a program on growing a “victory garden”, and next Wednesday, park educator Lisa Meadows will conduct a salamander safari. Call the park office for details and preregistration.
