In a news conference yesterday, Pirates General Manager Ben Cherrington had a lot to say about the team’s first season under his leadership.
The Bucs are reassigning Senior Director of Minor League Operations Larry Broadway to an unspecified position, and more changes are coming to the Pirates’ minor league teams.
He said he anticipates that shortstop prospect O’Neil Cruz will be available for spring training despite possibly facing charges in the Dominican Republic for an accident that took the lives of three people on a motorcycle last week. Cherington reiterated the team’s support for Cruz, who he earlier said was erroneously reported to be driving under the influence.
He said Cole Tucker is still considered an infielder by the Pirates, despite extensive playing time in center field during the regular season.
And Cherington said about 50 prospects are participating in an instructional league-style camp at the Pirate City complex in Bradenton, with the team hoping they can begin playing games around mid-October.
