At a ceremony earlier today at the Ben Franklin Elementary School, the ribbon was cut on the new Outdoor Classroom.
The space between the first and second-grade wings of Ben Franklin Elementary School was empty until it started to be utilized as a mask break space during the Covid-19 pandemic. That inspired one of the co-chairs of the classroom project, Sean Moran, to talk with principal Kelly Urbani to create the classroom.
That idea of bringing in tree stumps took root and has turned into an outdoor classroom facility with amphitheater, shaded and sunny areas to hold class, a pavilion with picnic tables, a kindness garden, a butterfly garden and art area among other items.
Support for the project came from the public, some grant funding and a major donation from the Indiana Kiwanis Club.
You can watch videos from the ribbon cutting ceremony and a tour lead by Sean Moran below. Those who want to see the classroom up close can come to an open house tonight from 6-7 PM.
