IUP has announced that while plans may change closer to the start of the fall semester, the university plans to reopen to traditional in-person classes at the start of the 2021-2022 school year.
The university had limited in-person attendance on-campus to about a third of the student body. Freshmen, international students, and students in classes that could not be attended remotely were allowed to attend classes in-person while others attended classes remotely. Furthermore, IUP president Dr. Michael Driscoll delayed the start of in-person classes for the spring semester by three weeks. The university also started to offer free Covid-19 testing on campus, along with a randomized student testing initiative.
In a statement, Driscoll praised the University Community for its resiliency during the pandemic, and for following the health and safety guidelines on campus.
Driscoll also talked about the factors that went into his decision.
A decision has not been made yet for May commencement exercises, and the PSAC and the NCAA have not made any decisions yet on sports for the fall semester.
The potential start date for the fall semester is August 23rd, but Driscoll said they will continue to follow PA Department of Health and CDC guidelines, and that means plans for the start of the semester could change.
