The state Primary Election is tomorrow, and the Indiana Area School District has issued a statement clarifying that an email sent by a group of candidates for school board is not an official statement by the current board.
The statement says the district has received multiple inquiries about a potential data breach of parent email information. It says the email was “designed to appear that it was sent by the current Board of Directors or the District Administration.”
The administration says it did not release any email information to any individual or group running for school board, including parent contact information. It also says such a release was not approved and district employees with access to the data are trained to know the seriousness of the unauthorized release of information. It does not know where the candidates obtained the data, but is confident it did not come from the school district.
THE STATEMENT BY THE INDIANA AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT:
Important Information Regarding School Board Election!
A recent email communication sent by candidates running for IASD School Board was designed to appear that is was sent by the current Board of Directors or the District Administration. It was not.
The District has received multiple inquiries about a potential data breach of parent email information. It is our understanding that parents received an email regarding candidates running for school board. Some have expressed concerns that the District may have released this information to the various candidates. Please know that the District did not release any email information to any individual or group running for school board. We take the security of our confidential data seriously, including parent contact information. At no time did the administrative office approve the release of any information, and our employees with access to this data are trained and aware of the seriousness of any unauthorized data release. We do not know where the candidates obtained the information, but are confident that it was not from the school district.
Neither the District nor the sitting School Board has, will, or should endorse any candidate. Doing so would simply be unethical. We wish all the candidates the best in their efforts running for school board, and thank them all for their willingness to serve our community.
