The Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry announced this morning that Pennsylvania’s unemployment rate went down two tenths of a percentage point in May.
The unemployment rate now stands at 6.9% in the state. Pennsylvania’s civilian labor force, which is the estimated number of residents working or looking for work, went down by 6,000 across the state as employment went up by 10,000 and unemployment fell by 16,000. The total number of non-farm jobs went up by 18,500 over the month of May to 5,684,200. Jobs went up in five of the 11 industry super sectors. The largest gain was in education and health services, which saw 12,200 new jobs, while the largest drop was 3,300 in construction. That marks the first drop in a year for the construction super sector.
The national unemployment rate went down three-tenths of a percentage point to 5.8 percent in May.
Unemployment statistics for the individual counties will be released later this month.
