The Penguins suffered a big loss over the weekend, but it wasn’t a skater. Director of hockey operations and hockey research Sam Ventura, “analytics guru” , was hired by the Buffalo Sabres as their new vice president of hockey strategy and research. Ventura handled the Penguins advanced analytics, contracts, salary cap, and union contract issues.
STANLEY CUP FINALS:
Josh Anderson scored 3:57 into overtime as the Canadiens beat the Lightning 3-2 in Montreal to stave off elimination in the Stanley Cup Finals. The Lighting lead the series, three games to one headed into Game Five tomorrow in Tampa Bay.
BLUE JACKETS’ GOALIE PASSES AWAY:
24-year-old Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender Matiss Kivlenieks was killed in a fireworks accident last night in a Detroit suburb. He was in a hot tub when a fireworks mortar explosion occurred. It appears Kivlenieks was struck in the chest by the mortar. The cause of death was chest trauma.
