One day after getting down to the 53-man roster limit, the Steelers shuffled that roster quite a bit yesterday, placing defensive end Stephon Tuitt, offensive tackle Zach Banner, and running back Anthony McFarland on injured reserve. They will have to miss at least the first three games of the regular season.
Three players cut the day before, guard BJ Finney, tackle Rashaad Coward, and cornerback Arthur Maulet, were re-signed.
Former Raiders and Browns safety Karl Joseph was added to the Steelers practice squad. The team also added former Washington wide receiver Steven Sims, former Broncos edge rusher Derrek Tuszka, ex-Panthers linebacker Christian Miller, and Daniel Archibong, who spent training camp with the Bears.
Steelers who did not make the cut on Tuesday but were signed to the practice squad yesterday were running backs Jaylen Samuels and Trey Edmunds, receivers Cody White and Rico Bussey, tight end Kevin Rader, offensive linemen Chaz Green Malcolm Pridgeon, and John Leglue, and defensive backs Mark Gilbert and Donovan Stiner.
Sixth-round draft pick linebacker Quincy Roche was claimed off waivers by the New York Giants.
Assistant coaches took to the microphones for media availabilities yesterday. Steelers defensive coordinator Keith Butler likes the versatility of his group, with guys capable of playing a number of positions.
Offensive coordinator Matt Canada says it’s important for the Steelers to scout individual matchups for each opponent to find out if there is something the offense can exploit.
Special teams coach Danny Smith is excited that the Steelers have such an athletic group of young players, including a talented draft class.
After saying that he wants to remain a Steeler when his contract expires after this season, cornerback Joe Haden now wants to explore unrestricted free agency. He posted a tweet yesterday that said, simply, “Last Dance”, and his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said Haden will be testing the market as a free agent.
