Pennsylvanians won’t vote for a governor until next year, but the race heats up a bit this week with the expected announcement by Republican Senator Scott Wagner that he will challenge incumbent Tom Wolf. Wagner is scheduled to make six campaign announcement appearances across the commonwealth this Wednesday and Thursday. He’s going to visit six small business, including stops in eastern Pennsylvania on Wednesday, and in Altoona, Murrysville, and in Lake City, Erie County, on Thursday.
Like Wolf, Wagner is from York County. Other Republicans said to be considering a run are Senate Majority leader Jake Corman, House Speaker Mike Turzai, former Lieutenant Governor Jim Cawley, and former Senator Rob Wonderling. House Majority Leader Dave Reed has been mentioned as a possible candidate for governor, but that’s now considered to be unlikely. Reed said last week on Indiana In the Morning that he’s been approached about running for a number of different offices, but is concentrating for now on his role in the House of Representatives.
Governor Wolf has not yet announced if he will seek re-election, but has positioned himself for a run. His spokesman, Jeff Sheridan, recently stepped down from his state post in order to work for Wolf’s campaign.
